The image overlay process can occur digitally or on the actual printed page. For digital applications, a document is merged digitally with an overlay before printing. This may be as simple as selecting watermark text in the print driver, or by merging an image with the document before sending the document to the printer. The physical mode variation handles this by printing the initial page, moving the page back into print position, usually in the duplexer, then printing the second page over the first. The second method can be used in monocolor printers to achieve dual-color printing.
